Barbara Stokes:Let me just say we would not be worried about the party or the party-poopers if the presence and the power of the Lord were there.
That is not to say that Christ is against a good party for a good reason. Again, quoting Piper in his exposition of Luke 15:
In Luke 15: 11-24 Jesus gives a third answer to the Pharisees’ accusation. When he receives sinners and eats with them, it is like a father who finds a lost son and celebrates with all his house. All three parables have this in common: being lost and being found followed by great joy in heaven.
1. Verse 6: “Rejoice with me for I have found my sheep which was lost!”
2. Verse 9: “Rejoice with me for I have found the coin which I had lost!”
3. Verse 24: “‘This son of mine was dead, and has come to life again; he was lost, and has been found.’ And they began to be merry.”
A lost and found sheep—and a party. A lost and found coin—and a party. A lost and found son—and a party.
So are parties bad? Some could be. But I am glad to say that because of Christ and his Gospel, I have a good reason to party. Him!
